What is a hormone?

Hormones are chemical messengers that regulate the intricate mechanisms of your body. They travel through the bloodstream, delivering essential messages to tissues and organs. Most people will encounter hormonal fluctuations throughout their lives, particularly during puberty, pregnancy, menstruation, and menopause. While these changes are expected, they may occasionally raise more cause for concern.

A hormonal imbalance occurs when there is an excess or deficiency of specific hormones in your bloodstream. While there are over 50 hormones that can impact your overall health, female hormonal imbalances are commonly caused by adrenaline, insulin, steroid and growth hormones, estrogen, and progesterone.

Hormonal Imbalances Explained

The symptoms that appear from hormonal imbalances depend on the specific condition present. In general, the most common symptoms that result from hormone imbalances include:

  • Weight changes
  • Acne on the face, upper back, or chest
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Irregular periods
  • Hyperpigmentation

Because the functions of hormones vary drastically, it is difficult to detect when there is an imbalance. That is why different tests can be performed to identify the particular problem. Blood tests measure hormone levels in the bloodstream; imaging techniques are used to identify cysts or tumours that may be causing the hormonal imbalance; and urine tests are employed to examine levels of hormones related to the menstrual cycle.

What can you do?

If a hormonal balance is found treatments may range from hormone replacement medication to birth control prescriptions and lifestyle changes. Remember, if you fear you may have a hormonal imbalance, it is crucial to always consult your doctor to prevent major complications.
