Sometimes it may feel as though you are bleeding too much during your period. Is it possible to over bleed, and can losing too much blood become dangerous?

Anemia, Explained

One in five women suffers from a type of abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) referred to as menorrhagia. This menstrual condition is characterized by prolonged and heavy menstrual bleeding, which in turn poses a risk of anaemia. So, what is anaemia, and how can a heavy period lead to it? Anaemia is a common blood disorder found in individuals with a lower-than-normal haemoglobin concentration. Haemoglobin, a protein stored in red blood cells, plays a vital role in oxygen transportation throughout your body. Though anaemia has many underlying causes, one of the primary reasons it may develop is the loss of peripheral red blood cells.

Symptoms to spot

With menorrhagia, your body may be losing more red blood cells than it can produce, leading to a reduction in the amount of iron in your body. Since iron is a key component needed to produce haemoglobin, its depletion may result in iron deficiency anaemia. This type of anaemia can cause symptoms such as:

  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness
  • Weakness
  • Pale skin
